Kermen

Kermen is a home for 60 children with mild mental illnes.  There has been some great work going on here by the Sliven Baptist Church and the Saltmine Trust.  These people have provided for food supplements, some remodeling and lots of other items.

This home was the site of an extremely heart-wrenching child.  This little girl is shown in her "world".  Due to the lack of time to deal with her, this little gal's aggressive behavior gets her isolated in this pen almost all of the time.

We met two British women who had stayed at this home to help for the two weeks prior to our visit.  They told us that this little girl became restless and uncomfortable outside of this pen but that they had worked with her some and had seen a little progress.

Other kids live in a very crowded but clean environment.

As in Petrovo, some are in bed most of the time with little or no stimulation.

The staff that we met seemed to be gentle folks who are trying to do their best in a bad situation.

The indications were (from the staff) that their schooling possibilities were limited considerably by their lack of supplies of anything like construction paper, pens, markers etc.  Because of their partnership with the Saltmine Trust the basics such as food and washer/dryers has been addressed.

There is a stated problem with water in the 1st floor of one of the wings but a cursory look indicated to us that this was beyond our expertise to even address.

Needs
